Let there be colour – Durham Region Family Photographer

This fabulous family won the Image of the Year for 2013 (contest ran in 2014) and decided a fall session would be the way to go.

I loved their outfits and our location and all the laughing.  They are just too cute for words, don’t you think.

In there own words (as answered by Mom:))

Perfect Saturday.

My perfect Saturday involves a bit of a sleep in, then a hot tea with a bit of a knit, in my jammies of course ;). Soup and grilled cheese for lunch, then off to a hockey or ringette game.  After the game  we all would go up to Ashburn for dinner and a visit.  Rose would cook an amazing meal and we’d have a bottle of wine while the kids played.   And if the kids all fell asleep in the drive home, heaven!  I’d end the day with a knit infront of netflix with robbie!

You’re on an Island and can’t live without these 3 things.

On the island I’d need a good book, my current knitting project and…hmmm can I bring rob?  If not, clean underwear.

Advice for families trying to decide on clothes for their portrait session.

the most important advice I could give is to the moms…do you first!  Woman can be the most critical of ourselves so you want to be happy and confident in your appearance!  The first thing I do is pick my favourite piece.  It could be a dress, a scarf, or a sweater.  Then I build my outfit around it. Use it to decide on a limited palette for the rest of the family. One or two strong colours with complimentary neutrals.  I like to browse pinterest for ideas.  My favourite pictures are when the outfits have something to hold them all together while at the same time showing the individual personalities. Use one colour woven throughout everyone’s outfit in different ways.  use accessories as pops of colour.  Suspenders on little boys, belts or hats for older boys, jewellery or hair accessories for girls.  And don’t forget the shoes!  A cute high top can show the athlete, or a sparkly ballet flat for a diva.  Big patterns are evil, unless used in only 1 piece of clothing.
